  Michael graduated from East Tennessee State University in 1977 with a BS degree in Psychology and a minor in Biology. In preparation for entering PA school, he worked at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky and The University of Kentucky Medical Center.
  He graduated from the Clinical Associate (PA) Program from the University of Kentucky in 1981. While a PA student, he created the first overseas preceporship for his program, which was in Abu Dhabi.

  Upon graduation, he took a position with the Michigan Headpain and Neurological Institute (MHNI) in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  There he worked with Dr. Joel Saper in creating the second largest headache practice in the world and the first inpatient treatment program. This began Michael on a path that would eventually lead him to a life-long career working in headache disorders. After leaving MHNI, he and his family moved to Cairo, Egypt where he worked for two years in the Village of Garbage, a slum outside of Cairo, and completed a degree in Intensive Arabic Studies at the American University in Cairo.

  After returning to the US, Michael served as a captain in the Air Force, where he created a headache clinic. From there he worked in the Division of Headache at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. For a change in geographic scenery in 2003 Michael moved, with his wife Denise and their five children, to Fidalgo Island in Washington State. There he established a headache clinic in association with Cascade Neurologic Clinic.  He has published over twenty-five articles in national peer-review journals and lectured widely on headache topics. Mike is the author of two books and has most recently become the first Chairperson of the PA/NP section of the American Headache Society. He enjoys sea kayaking, rock climbing, hiking, building houses, studying history and philosophy and travel.
