  Elayne DeSimone is a graduate of one of the first nurse practitioner programs at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1981. Her clinical training was at Long Island Jewish Hospital in New Hyde Park NY and at the University Medical Center at Stony Brook. Upon graduation, she continued her training in endocrinology in her role as research coordinator and nurse practitioner for the Osteoporosis Trials at the Brookhaven National Laboratory and Winthrop University Hospital in New York. In the early 1980s Elayne also became certified as a physician assistant in New York State. She completed doctoral studies in nursing research and theory development at Adelphi University where she researched the effects of chronic back pain in women with osteoporosis. Her thirty three years of clinical experience has taken her from critical care to research to primary care. Her present interests include eliminating barriers to practice for advanced practice clinicians and the development of evidence based complementary care protocols.

  Currently, Dr. DeSimone is a clinical associate professor in the adult and family nurse practitioner programs and director of the post masters program at the State University of NY at Stony Brook. In addition, she works in a free primary care clinic for the uninsured in West Chester Pa. She serves on the editorial board for Clinician Reviews - a journal for nurse practitioners and physician assistants and is the President of the American College of Clinicians. She co-founded the Nurse Practitioner Association of Long Island and is a past president of the New York State Coalition of Nurse Practitioners. Board certified in Adult Health, Dr. DeSimone is a fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, The American Holistic Nurses Association as well as a member in other interest groups.
